During the 18th century, jewelry making in Portugal reached its pinnacle. Brazil, Portugal’s colony, was a rich source of silver, gold and gems, particularly emeralds. The nobility was wealthy and kept the jewelers busy. In 2017 Sotheby’s and S.J. Philips of London collaborated on the exhibition The S.J. Philips Collection of the Jewels of Portugal which opened at the Casa-Museu Medeiros e Almeida in Lisbon, Portugal which has generated renewed interest in Portuguese jewelry from this period.
