Maryalice Huggins is a multi-media artist who works in several disciplines including monotype print-making, sculpture, graphite drawings and collage. Cartography has always interested Huggins. Inspired by it and the earth's altered eco-systems, she makes maps by manipulating paper to create the appearance of mountainous desert landscapes. These are then shaded with graphite and white chaulk. Random forms of life seem to hover over vacant terrain and become a metaphor for survival and evolution. In Huggin's most recent series, which Apparition is part of, she uses a constellation of colors placed beneath stiff, rounded bark grids, to evoke the power of buried emotions.
