We are delighted to announce our summer exhibition, Sand & Sea currently on view at our Newport, Rhode Island gallery. Summer in Newport is all about the beach and the ocean. It is great to have the walls of the gallery mirroring the activity all around us.

The earliest work on view is a c. 1855 painting by America’s pre-eminent marine painter, James Buttersworth, titled Black Squall at Gibraltar. Hedy Klineman, Andy Warhol’s colleague and collaborator at The Factory, created her Pop Art Andy Warhol’s Glasses silkscreen in 1988. It is the most recent work in the exhibition.

The renowned 2nd generation Hudson River School artist Worthington Whittredge painted some of his most iconic land and seascapes in Rhode Island. We are pleased to have At the Beach from c. 1870 by the artist for sale. Abraham Walkowitz’s 1908 Figures on a Balcony Overlooking the Beach is a wonderful Fauve monoprint in bright red, green, yellow, blue and pink hues. It is probably one of the earliest examples of an authentically American Fauve work. In 1959 the second generation Post-Impressionist Maurice Brianchon completed Estacade a Trouville. This large oil on canvas measuring 22 x 37 inches is of the famed beach and lighthouse in Trouville on the Normandy coast. It is simultaneously charming and sophisticated. Brianchon was an important artist who exhibited in England, France, Switzerland and the United States. He was even the official artist for Queen Elizabeth II’s 1957 coronation. Creepo, Fairfield Porter’s dog, will captivate you. The expressively painted black dog and his red tongue peer out from under the sand of a Southampton beach.

Please stop by the gallery at 59 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI (across from the historic Redwood Library) or view Sand & Sea on line at www.akeoghartanddesign.com. We look forward to your visit!
